Stählemühle

Stählemühle

Stählemühle produces some of the finest German schnaps available today. The extremely limited batches—made at an 18th century mill near Lake Constance—come wonderfully packaged, with their sleek labeling and nostalgia-infused bottle shapes. The distillery currently produces about 70 various spirits and liquors made from the most exotic and obscure fruits imaginable. After all, how often have you picked greengages, damsons, russet apples, or myrobalans? And what to think of ribes, common medlars, or European mountain ash? All are distilled by hand, in very small quantities—anywhere from 10 to a maximum of 200 bottles for each batch.

Lead distiller Christoph Keller, a former art publisher, had no prior knowledge or experience when it came to distilling spirits; he was just looking to slow down and relax from his rather hectic life. The challenges facing the self-taught budding distiller were manifold; however, fast-forward to the present day, and Stählemühle is regarded as one of the best distilleries in Germany and beyond. The distillers have won scores of awards—both national and international—even leading once prominent newspaper to proclaim: “Christoph Keller doesn’t make schnaps—he makes works of art in a glass!”
